Bikeshare cycles dumped en masse in China

More than 500 bicycles from China’s flourishing bike-sharing companies have been dumped in huge piles on the streets of the southern city of Shenzhen, reports said.

Pictures showed jumbled stacks of vehicles nearly three meters high, with handlebars, baskets and other parts scattered on the ground.

City streets around the country have seen an explosion of the colorful bikes that users can rent on demand with a smartphone app and then park wherever they choose.

The sharing economy is taking off in China, where ride-sharing and AirBnb are increasingly commonplace.

New tech firms such as Ofo and Mobike, with their rival fleets of bumblebee yellow and fluorescent orange bikes, have been locked in a cutthroat battle for users and profit.
But problems have arisen when clients have abandoned their cycles.

“Some people these days just have really bad character,” a man named He, who lives near where the stacks appeared, told the Southern Metropolis Daily.

“When they’re done using the bike they just throw it away somewhere, because they’ve already paid.”

In the past few days he witnessed people demolishing the bikes before discarding them on the side of the road, he said.

Residents told the paper that bikes have been piling up over the past week, either parked haphazardly by careless users or stacked by local security guards trying to clear narrow residential alleys and footpaths.

Zhuang Chuangyu, a representative to Shenzhen’s municipal people’s congress, said that the city needed to step up regulation of the ballooning bike-sharing industry in order to improve traffic conditions and safety standards, especially since primary and secondary school students often used the bikes.

Former US President George H.W. Bush and wife hospitalized

Former President of the United States of America George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, remain hospitalized in Houston, where he was in intensive care for pneumonia and she was being watched after complaining of fatigue and coughing.
The 92-year-old former president went into the ICU on Wednesday and underwent a procedure "to protect and clear his airway that required sedation," family spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement.
Bush was stable and resting comfortably at Houston Methodist Hospital, McGrath said.
The 41st president was placed in the ICU to address "an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia," McGrath said. He later told The Associated Press that doctors were happy with how the procedure went. Bush was first admitted to the hospital Saturday for shortness of breath.
"I don't think there's a whole lot of money to be gained betting against George Bush," McGrath said. "We're just kind of in a wait-and-see mode."
McGrath said Barbara Bush, who is 91, had not been feeling well for a couple of weeks and decided "to take it out of committee and have the experts check it out." He described the move as precautionary.
Physicians initially believed the former president would be released later this week following several days of treatment, but his stay has been extended, McGrath said. There is no timetable for his release.
Doctors want to see how the former first lady responds to treatment before allowing her to return home, he said.
The Bushes, who were married Jan. 6, 1945, have had the longest marriage of any presidential couple in American history. At the time of their wedding, he was a young naval aviator. She had been a student at Smith College.
After World War II, the pair moved to the Texas oil patch to seek their fortune and raise a family. It was there that George Bush began his political career, representing Houston for two terms in Congress in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Bush, who served as president from 1989 to 1993, has a form of Parkinson's disease and uses a motorized scooter or a wheelchair for mobility. He was hospitalized in 2015 in Maine after falling at his summer home and breaking a bone in his neck. He was also hospitalized in Houston the previous December for about a week for shortness of breath. He spent Christmas 2012 in intensive care for a bronchitis-related cough and other issues.
Despite his loss of mobility, Bush celebrated his 90th birthday by making a tandem parachute jump in Kennebunkport, Maine. Last summer, Bush led a group of 40 wounded warriors on a fishing trip at the helm of his speedboat, three days after his 92nd birthday celebration.
Bush's office announced earlier this month that the couple would not attend Donald Trump's inauguration because of the former president's age and health.
"My doctor says if I sit outside in January, it likely will put me six feet under. Same for Barbara. So I guess we're stuck in Texas," Bush wrote in a letter to Trump.
His son George W. Bush, the 43rd president, still expects to attend the inauguration and does not plan to travel to Houston, spokesman Freddy Ford said.
Trump and President Barack Obama sent their well wishes — via Twitter and a news conference respectively. Former President Bill Clinton also tweeted: "41 and Barbara — thinking about you both and sending wishes for a speedy recovery. Love, 42."
George Herbert Walker Bush, born June 12, 1924, in Milton, Massachusetts, also served as CIA director and Ronald Reagan's vice president.
George W. Bush was elected president in 2000 and served two terms. Another son, Jeb, served as Florida governor and made an unsuccessful bid for the GOP nomination in 2016. Only one other U.S. president, John Adams, had a son who also became president.

Protesters, Trump supporters clash outside 'DeploraBall'

Protesters and supporters of President-elect Donald Trump clashed outside a pro-Trump event in Washington the night before his inauguration. Police used chemical spray on some protesters in an effort to control the unruly crowd.
Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the National Press Club in downtown Washington, where the "DeploraBall" was being held. The name is a play on a campaign remark by Hillary Clinton, who once referred to many of Trump's supporters as a "basket of deplorables."
Protesters booed any time presumed ball-goers in suits, tuxedos or dresses came in or out of the event.
One man waving a pro-Trump flag had debris thrown at him and was chased to the nearby Warner Theater, where Fox News Channel personalities Sean Hannity and Geraldo Rivera happened to be outside waiting to go into another event. Hannity engaged hecklers by raising his fist; Rivera laughed and smiled before entering the theater.

3 killed, 20 hurt after car strikes pedestrians in Melbourne

A man deliberately drove into a street crowded with pedestrians in Australia's second-largest city on Friday, killing at least three people and injuring 20 others, police said. Officials said the incident had no links to terrorism.
The chaos began in the early afternoon, after a man was seen driving in erratic circles in the middle of a major intersection in downtown Melbourne. The driver then turned onto the Bourke Street Mall, a pedestrian-only road, deliberately colliding with pedestrians before continuing onto a sidewalk and hitting several other people, Victoria state Police Acting Commander Stuart Bateson said.
The man was arrested at the scene and there was no further threat to the public, Bateson said. Police believe the incident is somehow connected to a stabbing that had occurred in the city earlier in the day.
The incident comes amid global concern over extremists using vehicles to strike crowds, following truck attacks in Berlin and Nice, France last year. Bateson said the Melbourne incident had no links to terrorism.
"At this present stage, we ask the public to avoid the city," Bateson told reporters. "It is going to take us a really long time to process this scene. Our priority at the moment is with the injured, and it must be that we give them our attention."
Paramedics were assessing 20 people at the scene, several of whom had serious injuries, Ambulance Victoria said in a statement.
Video footage shot from a news helicopter overhead showed several heavily armed police officers standing near the area where the incident occurred. Several officers could be seen standing over a man lying on the sidewalk, clad only in his underwear, his hands apparently handcuffed behind his back. Police could also be seen examining a heavily damaged red car at the scene.
A video posted on social media captured the moment the car began driving in circles in the intersection before continuing on toward Bourke Street.
The streets around the incident were shut down.
The Australian Open tennis championship is currently being held in the city. Officials said the event was continuing as normal.

'The work begins!': Trump to be sworn in as U.S. president

Donald Trump began the ceremonial events leading up to his swearing-in later on Friday as the 45th president of the United States, when he will take power over a divided country after a bitter campaign and set the country on a new, uncertain path at home and abroad.
Trump and his vice president, Mike Pence, will take the oath of office at midday (1700 GMT) outside the domed U.S. Capitol, with U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts presiding. Organizers expected crowds of upwards of 900,000 people, including protesters.
"It all begins today!" Trump, a Republican, wrote in a note on Twitter at about 7:30 a.m. "I will see you at 11:00 A.M. for the swearing-in. THE MOVEMENT CONTINUES - THE WORK BEGINS!"
He stayed the night at an official guest house near the White House and began the day attending a prayer service at St. John's Episcopal Church, a block away.
Trump, wearing a dark suit and red tie, and his wife, Melania, clad in a classic-styled, powder blue ensemble, then headed into the White House for a meeting with outgoing Democratic President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle.
Streets near the president's home were blocked to traffic by empty buses and dump trucks or temporary pedestrian security checkpoints. Checkpoints around the National Mall in front of the Capitol opened early to begin admitting guests. Some wore red caps bearing Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan.
Most of the area was orderly, but about 100 protesters shouted slogans near one checkpoint and linked arms to block people from entering. Police in riot gear pushed them back into an intersection to allow people attending the inauguration to reach the checkpoints.
Trump, 70, takes office with work to do to bolster his image. During a testy transition period since his stunning November election win, the wealthy New York businessman and former reality TV star has repeatedly engaged in Twitter attacks against his critics, so much so that one fellow Republican, Senator John McCain, told CNN that Trump seemed to want to "engage with every windmill that he can find."
An ABC News/Washington Post poll this week found only 40 percent of Americans viewed Trump favorably, the lowest rating for an incoming president since Democrat Jimmy Carter in 1977, and the same percentage approved of how he has handled the transition.
His ascension to the White House, while welcomed by Republicans tired of Obama's eight years in office, raises a host of questions for the United States.
Trump campaigned on a pledge to take the country on a more isolationist, protectionist path and has vowed to impose a 35 percent tariff on goods on imports from U.S. companies that went abroad.
His desire for warmer ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin and threats to cut funding for North Atlantic Treaty Organization nations has allies from Britain to the Baltics worried that the traditional U.S. security umbrella will be diminished.

Democrats' boycott
The inaugural festivities may have a more partisan edge than usual, given Trump's scorching campaign and continuing confrontations between him and Democrats over his take-no-prisoners Twitter attacks and pledge to roll back many of Obama's policies.
More than 50 Democratic lawmakers plan to stay away from the proceedings to protest Trump, spurred on after he derided U.S. Representative John Lewis of Georgia, a hero of the civil rights movement, for calling him an illegitimate president.
Thousands of anti-Trump protesters were expected among the inauguration crowd and many demonstrators will participate in a "Women's March on Washington" on Saturday. Protests are also planned in other cities in the United States and abroad.
Trump, whose Nov. 8 victory stunned the world, will start his presidency with a 20-minute inaugural address that he has been writing himself with the help of top aides.
"It will be optimistic. It will be visionary, but it's going to be philosophical," his spokesman, Sean Spicer, told NBC on Friday.
Keith Kidwell, chairman of the Republican Party in Beaufort County, North Carolina, was among the crowds on Friday, eager to see the start of the Trump presidency.
"I cling to my guns and my Bible. I've been waiting a long eight years for this day," said Kidwell, adding he initially supported U.S. Senator Ted Cruz to be the Republican presidential nominee but was now squarely behind Trump.

Trump's to-do list has given Republicans hope that, since they also control the U.S. Congress, they can quickly repeal and replace Obama's signature healthcare law, approve sweeping tax reform and roll back many federal regulations they say are stifling the U.S. economy.
"He's going to inject a shock to the system here almost immediately," Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway told Fox News.
Democrats, in search of firm political footing after the unexpected defeat of their presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, are planning to fight him at every turn. They deeply oppose Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric from the campaign trail and plans to build a wall along the southern U.S. border with Mexico.
"We won't oppose Trump just because his name is on something, but when he's against the values we believe in... we're gonna fight," Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer told CNN.
Trump's critics have been emboldened to attack his legitimacy because his win came in the Electoral College, which gives smaller states more clout in the outcome. He lost the popular vote to Clinton by about 2.9 million.
"Any time you don’t win the popular vote but you win by the Electoral College it makes people come unglued," said presidential historian Douglas Brinkley. "It angers people that somebody can win the popular vote but you're not president."
Trump's critics also point to the conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia used hacking and other methods during the campaign to try to tilt the election in the Republican's favor. The president-elect has acknowledged the finding - denied by Moscow - that Russia was behind the hacking but said it did not affect the outcome of the election.
To his critics - including Obama who during the campaign called Trump temperamentally unfit for the White House - his straight talk can be jarring, especially when expressed in tweets. His supporters, many of them working-class whites, see Trump as a refreshingly anti-establishment figure who eschews political correctness.
"He's here for the working man" supporter Adam Coletti of Plainfield, Connecticut, said as he headed toward the inauguration.

Ode to my uncle

After a small hike, I reached the wall from where I could look down into the still water of Kensico Reservoir, New York. The water was gleaming as it reflected the sun; however it was cut by an alternating streak of darkness that surfaced from the deep. As I stood there all alone, taking in the immense beauty of nature, I saw life and death in that pattern.

How unfairly we think of death, treating it as a snatcher, intruder and, something that shouldn’t be mentioned. If it were not for its horrifying shadow we would not see the light of life. Deep in my heart death still was a foreign language that I had no business dealing with, not yet.

But a few days back, one telephone call jarred all the philosophy of death out of me.  Death had buckled us down to our knees as it plucked a young flower from our garden. I stood wondering at the justice of God, haunted every minute by the image of my smiling uncle who now wouldn’t be there for us.  My uncle was no more.

Bhagwad Geeta tells us that the soul is eternal. Our bodies in ultimate truth are just garments that we take off when we die. It is beautiful to know that we belong to the divine source of energy which has created this universe, that we have an opportunity to stay in this world to give love, achieve respect and become a better person before we meet the divine again. Divine is death. But I am not prepared for the divine until I have given all that I am here to give. Nor I believe was my uncle that day when he went out for his walk early in the morning. There must have been a miscalculation for it was not his turn yet.

I cannot shake his image that haunts me much of my waking hours. With him he took away our childhood. He met death doing what he loved best. He must be onto another walk because he cannot just cease to be. So it is not farewell, it is just that you are now a walk greater than the walks you took.

I am a feminist, are you?

‘Feminist’ - a word I have heard many a times during the course of my lifetime. Few years ago, when this word came up during discussion among friends, we ignored it, as if describing yourself as a feminist was a crime. And now, I embrace it. But people still freak out when I use this word. Our lifestyle has evolved. But our perception and our thoughts are still the same. The word ‘feminist’ is partially understood, wrongly perceived and blindly criticized.

‘Feminism’ means advocating for women’s right in social, political and economical ground. Yes, I am a feminist. I choose equality over discrimination. I choose respect over dominance and emancipation over tyranny. Women have long been victim of suppression and domination in different aspects of development. They are to be given opportunities at different levels for their all round development. Give me an opportunity because I am educated, not because I am a woman. If we are to uplift the underprivileged female population, we need to provide them education and awareness, quota system is not the only solution.

We have a female president in the country. Our chief justice and speaker of the house are also female. We have female entrepreneur who have broken the stigma of business world.

It feels ecstatic to have ladies at the top but can we take this as a milestone in women empowerment? It is sad that a woman’s existence is only validated with the existence of her husband and her children’s with the presence of their father.

Male patriarchy in the society is deep rooted. Women have been fighting relentlessly for their rights. A daughter should be taught to fight for her rights, finance herself and marry only when she wants to, not because she is in her twenties.

As a man, your respect for women should not be defined by the length of her dress. As a woman, I prefer to pay my own bills when I go out on a date. I do not shy away when I have to express my opinions and I do not fear to call out the guy who makes me a subject of eve teasing. Salary should be determined by the skills not by the sexes.

I am a woman and that does not always imply I am weak. I don’t carry begging bowl of ‘I am woman so give me this right’ everywhere. Gone are the trends of ‘Ladies First’. I can stay in the queue and wait for my turn. Yes, I am a woman and I am strong. I can write my own destiny and it will never need affirmation from any man. I respect men who have a role to play in my life but I can conquer my own Everest. I voice for equality if I am not treated equal. I am a warrior in my shining armor and I can take the lead in my fight. I do not demand sympathy and next time when someone calls me a feminist, I shall not be stupefied with the remark. Yes, I am a feminist. Are you one?

The Man She Needs

“Because life is all about compromise, you never get what you want, you are already 24 and have to do it,” my mother said. “He is rich, handsome, educated and most importantly a PR holder in Australia,” she added. Meanwhile, my father asked my sister to take some time.

My sister, these days, is flooded with marriage proposals, and tired of saying no. May be she is tired of rejecting but my family would never get tired of showing her next best alternative.

A girl in her mid-twenties is parent’s obligation. The stories in my society are similar to my sister’s story. Some dream of a rich husband with cars in their late teen where some dream of marrying their present boyfriends. And some again make plans to marry a PR holder abroad. These girls go through the similar struggle but the story might be different for a girl who loves her independence and ideology.

After two days, my sister came up with an idea of rejecting this alternative too. Everyone is allowed to make choices in our family but with valid justification, so for my sister saying no wasn’t the problem rather the real problem was her later justification.

She was hungry for her own identity. She wasn’t expecting a diamond ring from her husband but wanted to earn on her own. I heard a different story that night, the story that unfolds climax and was generally non-occurring. She dreams of a man: tall in self-esteem and high in life; a self-made man who respects others and treats everyone fairly.

She kept on talking about her choice and compelled me to go through my expectations that time. May be there is nothing to do with social hierarchy while making life choices.

Rich, classy and big party throwers are not the heroes of my story anymore. He who is rich in virtue, classy in character and smart in thoughts can take away my attention than typical eye luring characters.

Be what you want to be; willing to pay the price?

When I remember my childhood, I argue with my friends and colleagues that my early ages were as playful and as imaginary as those girls in ‘Little Women,’ except that I am a male. We used to roam wild and free, and always sticking around the pack: those were the carefree days- totally unaware and ignorant of even a little practicality of households, and of life. Our hobbies had no limits. When I look back at those years, it summons inside me a kind of great dissatisfaction that if I was within reach of each facet of that child, I would have much material even to write an infamous autobiography.

As a matter of fact, I strived again to start over my career as a movie script writer and even director but it never got off my mind that my father had spent a fortune so that I could be a good teacher or a five star hotel manager, not a script writer. My sister had much belief in astrology, and was much concerned about my career crisis. She once convinced me to consult an astrologer. The astrologer, after having looked my birth chart, added to my frustration, that I will not be able to do well in theaters. Next day, in school, I did much survey on my students of what they really wanted to be in future. Each of them prepared a page long essay as an assignment on their ambition and dream jobs. Surprisingly, one of the students’ essays drew much of my attention, as he had written that he was willing to pay any price in order to fulfill his dreams.

As a child, I had evidently developed a clear ambition, and unquestionably I did well, too.

The student’s essay had stirred all the questions that were left unanswered. After much contemplation, I triggered rounds of questions: what if I had put the effort of every living moment into reaching my goal? My family had paid for my studies since I was in playgroup, so they wanted me to be what they wanted me to be and I wouldn’t want to shatter their dreams and of course, the astrologer had his own way of advising people.

My parents had no idea of the puzzle that I was trying to solve since I joined high school.

They had a choice in me, and always wanted me to be in a government job or join a reputed school, simply because I wouldn’t be unemployed. But high hopes and getting a permanent contract letter at a company are not the ambition as I define them.

What made me think was the minimal effort I was spending on script writing which made me realize only dreaming is not enough. What counts is the trick to master the ambition we have built. We need to be persistent and consistently follow our dreams and not give up. We can achieve whatever we want, as long as we are willing to pay the price.

Record five times champion Gyanu Baba Higher Secondary School of Pokhara is not competing in the current edition of the tournament. However, players of Gyanu Baba including captain Manju Gurung, Aruna Shahi and Manti Ale Magar are playing for Western Region this time.

APF, which has won the tournament four times, is looking forward to match Gyanu Baba's record lifting the title of the ongoing tournament. But Reed Model has emerged as a tough nut to crack for the departmental side and its captain Reshma Bhandari thinks both teams have equal chances to become champion.

“We are not weaker than Reed Model's Indian players. We are strong in spike while Reed Model holds superiority is other departments. We need to come up strongly in the upcoming matches to lift the trophy," said Reshma, who is also the spiker of the national team. Saraswati Chaudhary, Nebika Chaudhary are the other national team members who play in similar position to Reshma for APF.

In the ongoing tournament, Reed Model has not lost a single set while APF lost to Reed Model besides losing one set each in the matches against Western Region and Police.
Similarly, New Diamond, runner-up of the last four editions of the tournament, stands third in points table. New Diamond has added 27 points from 11 matches in the competition after losing the first leg matches to APF and Reed Model.

Meanwhile, one-time champion Police registered win in its second match of the day.

Police pulled straight sets win of 25-12, 25-17, 25-13 over host Dhorpatan Sports Training Center. Police has extended its points tally to 21 from 12 matches to remain in fourth place while Western Region with equal points is fifth on the basis of head-to-head record.

Another departmental side Army has 15 points from 12 matches to remain sixth and host Dhorpatan remains at the bottom with eight points.

Arsenal's Koscielny launches passionate defense of Wenger

Arsene Wenger's recent record at Arsenal should not undermine the long-serving manager's ability to help his players develop and fulfil their potential, defender Laurent Koscielny has said.
Despite winning the FA Cup twice in the last three campaigns, Wenger has come under growing pressure for his failure to guide Arsenal to the Premier League title since 2004.
"You may say that we haven't won the title for a long time, but he has not just built players, he's built men too. Every player who has played for Arsenal has grown here and has become a man," Koscielny told the club's website.
"It's a big number (of players). For me and the others, it's a good opportunity to be with him and learn from him. He's passionate about football. He loves football and he loves to watch his team play well with the ball.
"That's why he's here again after 20 years. Along with a lot of people, he's helped this club grow with a new stadium, a new training ground, and he built the platform for us to compete for the Premier League and Champions League every year."
Arsenal, who are fourth in the table, eight points behind leaders Chelsea after 21 games, host 10th-placed Burnley on Sunday.
